Last Wednesday, on a road trip through Southern India I witnessed something extraordinary: a 21-kilometer-long procession of people walking to honor Mahatma Gandhi’s birthday. Hindus, Christians, Muslims – all united.
This was not a once off occasion, it’s done every single year across the country.
It was a powerful display of respect that inspired me.
Gandhi wasn’t just a leader. He was an innovator who changed the game by focusing on what truly mattered: the people.
Before Gandhi, there were FIVE major attempts to challenge British control of India. All failed. Why? They focused on beating the British and lost sight of the real goal – improving people’s lives.
Mahatma Gandhi? He rewrote the playbook.
? He understood the needs: Gandhi recognized the Indian people’s desire for freedom, dignity, and unity.
✊ He changed the approach: Instead of conventional tactics, Gandhi introduced nonviolent civil disobedience – a method that empowered every Indian.
? He united people: While others let divisions weaken them, Gandhi brought people together across religious and caste lines.
? He employed innovative strategies: The Salt March, promoting homespun cloth – simple actions that directly improved people’s lives while challenging the status quo.
The result? After 150 years, India gained independence.
But more importantly, Gandhi’s approach left a lasting positive impact on over a billion lives.
In business, politics, or life – when facing challenges, focusing solely on ‘winning’ or ‘beating competitors’ can make you lose sight of your true purpose.
The more time you focus on competitors, the less time you focus on the customer.
Consider the fact that competitors might be outperforming you because they worry about the customer more than they worry about you.
The real power lies in creating value for those you serve.
Next time you think about your competitors, ask yourself “How exactly does this help me better serve my customers?”
