Lessons in Resilience from My Incredible Mother-in-Law

by Jeremy Tang

She was forced out on her own as a teenager.

My mother-in-law is the epitome of grit. Not even completing high school, she worked triple shifts in kitchens to support her two kids as a single mother.

Home? A single rented bedroom in a crowded boarding house. For decades, she pushed her body to the limit, until her knees finally gave out, requiring surgery.

She lived with us and needed months to recover, unable to work. One day, I stumbled upon a wrapped-up can in the laundry. Curious, I asked my middle child about it.

The answer floored me.

My mother-in-law, despite being unable to work, still wanted to buy treats for her grandchildren. So what did she do?

Unbeknownst to me, still limping from the surgery she started collecting cans around the neighbourhood to earn enough money for sweets.

Let that sink in.

Her actions demonstrated:

?️ Resourcefulness is everything. When life throws you a curveball, you don’t complain. You find a way.

?Generosity fuels success. Giving, even when you have nothing, is the ultimate wealth mindset.

?Small actions compound. One can at a time builds an empire of goodwill.

My children have the opportunity to observe firsthand what it means to be unstoppable.

And I have the opportunity to live with someone who inspires me everyday with her resilience.

I hope you all have someone who inspires you in the same way.
