Finding Pure Joy and Simplicity with ‘Pura Vida’ in Costa Rica

by Jeremy Tang

¡Pura Vida!

As I travel through Costa Rica, I’ve been captivated by the magical phrase “Pura Vida”, a term that transcends mere words. Literally meaning “pure life,” this expression serves as a greeting, farewell, and life philosophy all rolled into one.

Originating from a Mexican film in 1956, “Pura Vida” has become the heartbeat of Costa Rican culture. It’s used to say hello, goodbye, express that “everything’s cool,” or even to brush off life’s challenges. More than just a phrase, it’s a lifestyle that celebrates simplicity, gratitude, and an unwavering positive outlook.

While it shares the same spirit to the Latin phrase “Carpe Diem,” which means “seize the day,” “Pura Vida” goes far beyond just an occasional reminder; it is woven into the fabric of daily life here. It acts as a daily mantra, encouraging everyone to embrace joy and remain grateful for every moment. This constant reminder fosters a culture that prioritizes happiness and resilience.

On this trip I’ve had the pleasure of engaging with many locals who embody this spirit. Their consistent level of optimism and appreciation for life’s simple pleasures is inspiring.

In this spirit of gratitude and positivity, I wish everyone not just a joyful holiday season but a life enriched by Pura Vida – where you cherish each day, find beauty in the ordinary, and approach life (and business) with a smile.
