Staying 5 Steps Ahead
Preparing for a workshop this weekend, I’m revisiting the flywheel concept from Jim Collins’ “Good to Great.”
The flywheel is a powerful visual metaphor for compounding business momentum.
Collins observed that great companies don’t transform overnight. Instead, they build momentum gradually, like pushing a giant, heavy flywheel. Each turn builds upon the last, eventually creating unstoppable momentum.
This concept takes Ray Dalio’s second-order thinking to the next level. While second-order thinking considers the future consequences of present actions (like choosing exercise over junk food), the flywheel maps out interconnected steps that drive continuous growth.
The key? Identifying that crucial first step that sets everything in motion. For my business, our flywheel looks like this:
? Deliver Bigger Results Faster
? Customers Grow Faster
? We Learn and Earn Faster
?️ We use the Insights and Profits to Build Better Technology
? Which delivers Bigger Results even faster
This flywheel has propelled our growth far beyond what we initially imagined. It led to the development of CMAX, our SEO platform that automatically captures 90% of SEO opportunities completely missed by conventional approaches.
By consistently delivering bigger results faster, we gained insights that allowed us to create a tool that revolutionizes the SEO landscape.
Your turn:
? Research Jim Collins’ Flywheel concept
? Study the results and process of developing flywheels for various companies and individuals
? Identify your core growth driver
?️ Map out subsequent steps that feed back into step 1
? Refine until you have a logical, self-reinforcing loop
This exercise isn’t just for organizations. It’s equally powerful for individuals seeking insights into mechanisms that fuel continued personal growth. Remember, growth isn’t always about money.
It’s about understanding that the path to greatness in any endeavor rarely offers instant gratification.
Your flywheel might include steps that don’t make immediate sense. But with this framework, you’ll recognize these as critical parts of your growth journey. Whether you’re building a business, advancing your career, or pursuing personal development, the flywheel concept can provide clarity and direction.
By seeing multiple steps ahead, you’re not just reacting – you’re architecting your future. What’s the first step in your flywheel?
