When the pilot becomes the co-pilot
Picture this: I’m sitting in a knee surgeon’s office. It’s a routine consultation for a family member with a torn meniscus.
Everything seems straightforward until he starts talking about the latest in robotic knee surgery, where AI takes the wheel. The robot handles a significant chunk of the operation, but don’t worry, the surgeon’s still in the driver’s seat, configuring and overseeing everything.
It’s no surprise that AI’s making waves in every industry, but surgery? That caught me off guard. Then I realised — why not? Robotics is the last mile for AI.
That’s why giants like OpenAI are betting big on startups like Figure AI and 1X Technologies. When AI steps into the physical world, it becomes unstoppable.
But here’s the critical question: When do we stop being the pilots and start becoming the co-pilots to AI? Are we just training data for AI until it outgrows us? It’s a bit of a Skynet scenario, isn’t it?
This surgeon I spoke with, one of the best in his field with over 20 years of experience, is already letting an AI-powered robot handle 20-30% of a surgery. How long before it’s 70-80% or more? And then, what’s the surgeon’s role? What’s their value?
I suspect the real barrier isn’t technology—it’s regulation. That’s what’s holding AI back from taking on more complex roles. Every professional needs to critically evaluate this new normal, as it’s something we can’t afford to ignore.
